Car Seats - Child Passenger Safety for Families

Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death among children ages 1 to 19. Do you know if your child’s car seat or booster seat is properly installed?

Three Rivers Public Health Department has certified child passenger safety technicians available to inspect and install car seats. If you have already obtained a car seat, inspections to ensure proper installation can be done by our technicians. These inspections are made by appointment only and offered in both English and Spanish for a $10 installation fee.

To receive a new car seat, an installation appointment is needed. New car seat installations are made by appointment only and offered in both English and Spanish.

Free car seat check events are also hosted each summer in each of the three counties served by 3RPHD.

During our Recycling Event in September, recalled, expired, or otherwise damaged car seats are collected from the community for transportation to a recycling center to be properly disposed of. THREE RIVERS DOES NOT ACCEPT USED CAR SEATS OUTSIDE OF THE SCHEDULED RECYCLING EVENT.  Please check our event calendar for the date of our annual Recycling Event. 3RPHD requests that you do not donate, give or sell used car seats to other community members.

Visit www.safekids.org for car seat tips specific for your child.

Please call 402-727-5396 for more information or to schedule a car seat appointment.

Transportation Training

Child passenger safety for Preschools, Child Care Centers, & School-Age Child Care Centers

Individuals who transport children on behalf of a preschool, childcare center or school-age only center must receive and maintain a valid certificate of completion of the "Safe Kids Nebraska Child Care Transportation Training" program within 90 days of employment and every five years thereafter.

Three Rivers Public Health Department offers this three-and-a-half-hour training in both English & Spanish at our Fremont office. The training costs $25 per student and a minimum of five attendees is required to hold the course. Each individual receives a certificate of completion after passing the hands-on installation portion of the training. If there is a full class, the training may run up to an hour over than the time stated three-and-a-half-hour time allotted.

Trainings are available upon request if the minimum of five attendees is met. Don’t have enough attendees? Call us for upcoming course dates.

Bike Safety

More children ages 5 to 14 are seen in emergency rooms for biking related injuries than any other sport. Helmet use is the most effective way to reduce bicycle-related fatalities.

SK3R works with community partners to hold events to raise awareness about bicycle safety by distributing informational materials and bike helmets to promote safely biking to school, proper helmet fit, and creating safe routes to school.

In addition, SK3R hosts a bike rodeo in each of the three counties, typically during the summer months. At these events, children in attendance with a parent or guardian who do not have a bike helmet may receive one at no cost to them along with a proper fitting by our staff. A safety obstacle course is also performed, usually by local law enforcement, to educate children on what to look out for when riding their bikes.

Bike safety presentations are also done for students at local schools.
